It was reported by the Financial Times this weekend that the value of the property market in 10 London boroughs matches that of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined.
Noting that the recession has “triggered a rapid polarisation of the market”, the report also claimed that the total housing stock value in Elmbridge, Surrey (popn 122k) exceeds that of Glasgow (600k).
A comparison was made between the Ibrox area of Glasgow, where a one-bedroom flat can sell for around £22k, and a £5m house in Elmbridge.
SURF will be exploring housing and property in a national conference on ‘Truths and Myths’: Infrastructure and Social Benefits on 29 May in Edinburgh. Keynote speakers include Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure.
