SURF is delighted to reveal the 2016 shortlist for our prestigious national awards scheme, which identifies and celebrates success in revitalising Scottish communities.
The SURF Awards are delivered each year by SURF – Scotland’s Regeneration Forum, in partnership with the Scottish Government.
SURF’s panel of 18 independent judges, experts drawn from national regeneration bodies and community groups, have assessed this year’s applicants and selected 13 shortlisted projects for 2016 across four categories. They are:
Gourock is shortlisted for Scotland’s Most Improved Town

- Auchterarder (Perth & Kinross)
- Gourock (Inverclyde)
- Linwood (Renfrewshire)
- Lochgelly (Fife)
Youth Employability: Removing Barriers:
- Stepping Up (Enable Scotland)
- Street League
- X-CEED (Rathbone)
Creative Regeneration:
- Made in Easterhouse (Glasgow)
- Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema (Bo’Ness, Falkirk)
- The Stove Network (Dumfries & Galloway)

Community Led Regeneration:
- Link Up Gallatown (Kirkcaldy, Fife)
- Tomintoul & Glenlivet Regeneration (Moray)
- UnstFest (Shetland)
Since 1998, the SURF Awards have promoted regeneration initiatives large and small from across Scotland. This year‘s shortlisted projects range from Dumfries to the nation’s most northerly island, Unst, and feature major town centre investments, national youth employability programmes, and activities led by arts organisations and community groups.
Over the coming weeks, the judging panel will be travelling across Scotland to visit all of these diverse projects to develop a better understanding of their impact and the contexts that they are operating in.
The winners will then be announced by the Scottish Government’s Minister for Housing and Local Government, Kevin Stewart MSP, on the evening of Tuesday 6 December at the 2016 SURF Awards Presentation Dinner event in Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel.
