Eight job centres are set to close in Glasgow – but three may remain open depending on consultation outcome
In December, the UK Government’s Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) announced plans to close half of the job centres in Glasgow. The DWP also opened a consultation on three of these job centres – Bridgeton, Castlemilk and Maryhill – for which planned closure would result in travel time of more than three miles.
SURF has formally responded to this consultation, requesting that the DWP “reconsiders and reverses” the plans. Noting that seven of Scotland’s 100 most deprived areas would be directly affected by closure of the three job centres – and that unemployment is widely expected to rise – SURF argued that the DWP should investigate the community, business, poverty and service user impacts before any final decision is made.
