Glasgow City Council has announced plans to install an artist in residence in each of the city’s 23 council wards.
Speaking at a Cultural Summit held in City Chambers, David McDonald, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of Glasgow Life, stated that the initiative would “champion local art” and strengthen previously underdeveloped and undervalued links between the creative industries and wider regeneration around the city.
The initiative marks the beginning of a wide ranging planning process for the city’s long term creative future. The council also announced plans for a new ‘Local Festivals Fund’ and for regular Cultural Summits to share ideas and forge new links between sectors.
SURF has had a long standing interest in developing the links between the arts and wider regeneration goals; through the ‘Creative Regeneration’ SURF Awards category and our Bridging Culture and Regeneration initiative. This has been strengthend further with the appointment in May of North Edinburgh Art’s Kate Wimpress as SURF Chair.
